Fennovoima will make its first public climate commitments to coincide with the Finnish Climate Summit, held in Helsinki on Wednesday June 13th. Fennovoima will emphasize, via public dialog, the significance of clean energy production as a way of combatting climate change, as well as promoting the growth of the cleantech field in Finland.

– Nuclear power has an important role in the battle against climate change. With this commitment we are demonstrating that we will take an active role in these discussions, Toni Hemminki, the CEO of Fennovoima emphasizes.

When in operation, the electricity production of Hanhikivi 1 power plant will provide an estimated 10% of the country’s electricity needs. The project is currently in the licensing phase. After Fennovoima obtains the Construction License, the construction of the nuclear power plant will begin. This significant investment promotes the growth of the cleantech business.

– We estimate that the cleantech sector in Finland will grow significantly with the Hanhikivi 1 project. As a result of participating in the project, many companies operating in Finland will get a valuable reference that will enable them to also participate in the construction of other demanding projects aimed at increasing clean energy in Finland and abroad, Hemminki states.

As a result of the construction of Hanhikivi 1 power plant the cleantech field will grow as follows:

  • net sales will increase by €400 million,
  • added value will increase by €120 million, and
  • employment will increase by 1,500 man-years.

The estimation is based on a resource flow method developed by Ramboll, which can verify the development of cleantech companies at the different stages of the project. The definition of the cleantech field is based on the Environmental Goods and Services Sector statistics of Statistics Finland.

The Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, together with the Finnish Climate Change Panel and Finnish Institute for International Affairs are organizing the Finnish Climate Summit on Wednesday 13 June from 9:00 – 14:15 at the Finlandia Hall in Helsinki. This high-level event will gather international speakers and Finnish influencers to discuss how we can move further and faster in tackling the climate crisis.
